After she hits the screen as Maria in Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated West Side Story, Rachel Zegler will be getting into character as none other than Snow White. Zegler has been cast as the titular princess in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the latest in Disney's slate of iconic animated films being remade into live action movies. Inspired by the original Brothers Grimm fairytale, it was released in 1937 as Disney's first ever animated feature. The classic story has since been adapted into several live-action iterations by other studios and production companies. Kristen Stewart (Snow White and the Huntsman), Lily Collins (Mirror Mirror), and Sarah Patterson (Snow White) have all played the princess in retellings, but this will be the first time Disney revisits the fairytale.

Here's everything we know so far about Disney's new Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Rachel Zegler will star as Snow White.

Zegler will play the iconic princess, according to Deadline. The outlet reported that Zegler's West Side Story performance "blew away" Disney casting executives, earning her role.

Zegler crafted a playful tweet after news of her casting broke, sharing a video of herself with a Snow White character at a Disney theme park and captioning it, "homegirl we have LOTS to catch up on."

"I'm constantly pinching myself—there's no way this is my life," Zegler—who stars on the cover of T&C's September issue—said. "That comes with a lot of gratitude and a lot of anxiety and a lot of impostor syndrome. I do have moments when I'm like, 'I am worthy, and I got this job for a reason.'"

While no other information regarding the cast has been shared publicly yet, we know that Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spiderman) is set to direct. Marc Platt (La La Land, The Girl on the Train, The Trial of the Chicago 7) will serve as producer. The project will be scripted by Erin Cressida Wilson, who wrote the adaptation for The Girl on the Train.

"Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts," Webb told Deadline. "Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale."

Details are slim about the project, but here's what we know so far:

There will be new songs.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who collaborated on the beloved soundtracks for La La Land and The Greatest Showman, will pen new songs for the remake.

Production hasn't begun—yet.

Production for the film is slated to begin in 2022, per Deadline. No further information regarding where it will be available or when it will premiere has been shared publicly. In the meantime, stream the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Disney+.
